PPF vs Ceramic Coating — Which Do You Need?
PPF and Ceramic Coating both protect your car, but they serve very different purposes. Learn which one you actually need — or whether you need both.
Two of the most common questions we hear at Detailing Spiders are: "Should I get PPF or Ceramic Coating?" and "What's the difference?" The short answer is — they're completely different products that solve different problems. Let's break it down clearly.
What is PPF?
Paint Protection Film is a thick, self-healing thermoplastic urethane film physically applied to your car's exterior. Think of it as invisible armour. It absorbs the impact of stone chips, gravel, road debris, and scratches before they can reach your paint. The self-healing topcoat even recovers from minor swirls using heat from sunlight.
Best for: Physical protection against stone chips, scratches, and road debris.
What is Ceramic Coating?
Ceramic Coating is a liquid nano-ceramic polymer that chemically bonds to your paint. It creates an ultra-thin, hydrophobic layer that repels water, dirt, and chemical contaminants. Water beads up and rolls off instantly, carrying dirt with it. It also provides UV protection and adds a deep, wet-look gloss.
Best for: Hydrophobic protection, easier cleaning, UV resistance, and enhanced gloss.
Key Differences
Impact Protection: PPF absorbs physical impacts (stone chips, gravel). Ceramic Coating does NOT protect against stone chips — it's too thin.
Self-Healing: PPF has self-healing technology. Ceramic Coating does not self-heal.
Hydrophobic Effect: Ceramic Coating excels here — extreme water beading. PPF alone offers minimal hydrophobic properties.
Appearance: Ceramic Coating adds noticeable gloss depth. PPF preserves the existing finish without changing it.
Durability: PPF lasts 7–10 years. Ceramic Coating lasts 3–5 years.
The Best Solution
For maximum protection, many of our customers at Detailing Spiders choose both. PPF on high-impact areas (hood, bumper, fenders) for physical protection, and Ceramic Coating over the entire car (including on top of the PPF) for hydrophobic protection and enhanced gloss.
This combination gives you the ultimate defence: physical impact protection from PPF + chemical/UV protection and self-cleaning from Ceramic Coating.
Our Recommendation
- Highway drivers: PPF is essential (stone chip protection)
- City drivers: Ceramic Coating is a great starting point
- Luxury/new car owners: Both PPF + Ceramic Coating
- Budget-conscious: Start with partial front PPF
